Training Session on the Cultivation of Gooseberry and Raspberry for Extension Officers

A half-day training was held on 18 March 2025 at Wooton CRS on the cultivation of two new fruit species, namely Cape gooseberry (also known as Physalis) and Red raspberry. These crops are now being disseminated among growers and the training had as main objective to build the technical capacity of Extension Officers/Senior Extension Officers in supporting the dissemination of these new crops.

A total of 30 officers participated in the session, during which they received technical insights on gooseberry and raspberry along with preliminary research findings. The session covered key topics including crop biology, growth habits, production seasons and main cultural practices such as land requirement, pruning techniques, plant density management and propagation methods. Challenges associated with both open field and protected cultivation of these crops were also discussed.
