Field day on Demonstrating Integrated Practices for Sustainable Fodder and Livestock Production

The Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI), under the Sustainable Land Management (SLM) project “Mainstreaming Sustainable Land Management and Biodiversity Conservation in the Republic of Mauritius” (ROM/GEF/UNDP Project ID 00115368), has implemented a pilot initiative on “Conservation Agriculture and Improved Livestock Technologies through the Establishment of Demonstration Sites.” at Curepipe Livestock Research Station, Petit Merlo Agroecological Silvo-pastoral site and Mapou Model Farm.

The objectives of the project are to:

  • Promote farming methods that protect soil, water and biodiversity while improving fodder and livestock productivity.
  • Reduce reliance on agro-chemicals and transform organic wastes into valuable inputs through recycling and composting.
  • Support resilient climate-smart farming that are easily adopted and implemented

FAREI held a visibility event for stakeholders on 21 May 2026 at the Curepipe Livestock Research Station where it showcased different practices of the SLM namely:

  • Establishment of integrated crop–livestock systems whereby crop and livestock wastes are composted and returned to the soil to improve fertility.
  • Conservation agriculture practices that maintain soil health, reduce erosion and limit agro-chemical use.
  • Production of high-quality, chemical-free fodder to ensure safe meat and milk production..
  • Water management to strengthen farm resilience to climate variability.
  • Promote efficient use of resources for a circular economy

This activity reinforced stakeholders’ commitment to promote these sustainable practices and chart a roadmap for a wider implementation across the agricultural sector.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr the Hon Arvin Boolell, GOSK, Minister of Agro Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries and Mrs Alka Bathia, Resident Representative, UNDP for Mauritius and Seychelles.
A video clip highlighting the project activities was projected during the event and a booklet on Sustainable Land Management Practices for Fodder production was also launched.
