The Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI) will launch Red Ruby, a new locally developed, high-yielding, open-pollinated red onion variety, on Thursday 22 October 2026 at its Head Office in Réduit.

Developed through a nine-year mass selection programme, Red Ruby produces uniform, firm bulbs and has a marketable yield potential of up to 42 tonnes per hectare. Adapted to all onion-growing areas in Mauritius, the variety offers opportunities to strengthen local onion production and reduce dependence on imported seeds.
