Notification of Internal Vacancy

POST OF RESEARCH SCIENTIST/SENIOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST (PLANT PATHOLOGY)

Applications are invited from qualified candidates who wish to be considered for appointment in the post of Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist (Plant Pathology) at the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI).
Appointment to the post will be initially on a temporary basis for a period of six months. Subject to satisfactory service, candidates may be offered substantive appointment.

I. QUALIFICATIONS
By selection from among serving officers on the permanent and pensionable establishment of FAREI possessing:

A. A Cambridge Higher School Certificate with passes at “Principal Level” in two science subjects or Passes in at least two science subjects obtained on one certificate at the General Certificate of Education “Advanced Level”.
B. A degree in one of the following fields from a recognised institution:-

(i) Horticulture
(ii) Plant Pathology
(iii) Botany
(iv) Agricultural Botany
(v) Agricultural Science
(vi) Agriculture
(vii) Crop Science
(viii) Crop Protection
OR
Equivalent qualification to A and B above acceptable to the Board.

C. Candidates should –

(i) reckon at least three years’ experience in duties related to Agriculture;
(ii) possess leadership and organising skills;
(iii) possess analytical, interpersonal and communication skills;
(iv) have the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team; and
(v) be computer literate.

Note 1:
In the absence of qualified serving officers, by selection from among candidates who possess qualifications specified at A, B and C above or equivalent qualification acceptable to the Board.
Note 2:
(i) Qualification for Cambridge Higher School Certificate of Education ‘Advanced Level” under A above should have been obtained prior to qualification at degree level specified at B above.
(ii) Candidates should produce written evidence of experience/knowledge claimed.

II. SALARY
The temporary appointment will carry flat salary at the rate of Rs28225 a month.
The permanent and pensionable post carries salary in scale:
Rs 28225 x 825 – 35650 x 900 – 37450 x 950 – 42200 x 1300 – 46100 x 1575 – 49250 x 1650 – 54200 x 1700 – 64400 x 1800 – 69800 (FAREI 39)

III. LIST OF DUTIES

1. To assist the Head of the Plant Pathology Research Division in the preparation of research and development programmes, the management and the proper functioning of the Division.
2. To identify plant disease problems and constraints faced by the stakeholders in relation to improvement of crop production.
3. To prepare administrative and technical reports for monitoring progress of work.
4. To assist in the monitoring and evaluation of research or extension activities.
5. To liaise with other research and extension divisions/units for feedback, coordination of activities, for collaborative work and to provide specialist support.
6. To prepare work programmes and resource requirements and to implement approved research programmes.
7. To present research results and conclusions through scientific publications, technical reports and extension messages, and participate in extension and training activities.
8. To communicate on research outcomes and ensure transfer of knowledge to extension and to other staff.
9. To manage resources allocated to research project/s.
10. To keep abreast of technological advances in respective disciplines/areas of responsibility.
11. To attend Boards and Committees, as and when required.
12. To assist in the implementation of the Performance Management System (PMS) in the Division.
13. To use ICT in the performance of his duties.
14. To perform such other duties directly related to the main duties listed above or related to the delivery of the output and results expected from the Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist (Plant Pathology) in the roles ascribed to him.

IV. MODE OF APPLICATION

Instructions to candidates:

1. Only application made on the prescribed form will be accepted.
2. Incomplete, inadequate or inaccurate filling of the form will lead to disqualification and elimination of the candidate.
3. Applicant should possess all certificates/qualifications at time of application.
4. Copy of certificates, and Identity Card must be attached to the application form.
5. Documentary evidence will have to be submitted for experience claimed & should be attached at the time of application.
6. The onus for the submission of equivalence of qualification (if applicable) from the relevant authorities (Tertiary Education Commission or Mauritius Qualifications Authority) rests on the candidates. Applications will not be considered failing the non-submission of Equivalence Certificate, as appropriate, by the closing date.
7. The post applied for should be clearly marked on the top left-hand corner of the envelope.
8. Application received after closing date will not be accepted.

V. CLOSING DATE
The duly completed application form should reach the Chief Executive Officer, FAREI, Head Office, Reduit, not later than 3.00 p.m. on 03 December 2025.
