Workshop on Macadamia Harvest and Post-Harvest Practices

A half-day workshop was held on 11 September 2024 at the FAREI Head Office, Réduit, to guide macadamia producers on best practices for harvesting and post-harvest processing, aimed at improving kernel yield and quality.

Following a welcome address by Dr. Asha Dookun-Saumtally, Chief Executive Officer of FAREI, Mrs. B. Dussoruth Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist (Fruit Division) gave a detailed presentation covering each step from harvest to final product packaging, highlighting key critical points at every stage of the process. Mrs. S. Subramaniam Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist (Fruit Division) also shared valuable insights on kernel drying, roasting, and packaging.

Participants were given a guided tour of the macadamia processing area, where they observed the drying (curing) process using simple equipment, with a focus on air flow, heat, and humidity control to ensure quality nuts. A demonstration of a macadamia nut cracker was also conducted, showcasing how the kernels (edible part) are separated from the nuts. The workshop concluded with a brainstorming session on post-harvest handling and management.

The macadamia project, launched in 2017 as an alternative to sugarcane, has achieved significant milestones:

  • Over 7,000 grafted plants have been distributed to 65 beneficiaries since 2019.
Growers have received guidance on planting, early plant care, and grafting techniques.
  • Field visits were organized to research stations for hands-on experience.
  • A previous workshop in 2023 shared preliminary processing results and explored bulk nut processing and marketing options.
Support provided to growers includes assistance with drying, curing, and cracking of nuts to ensure high-quality edible kernels.
