Vigora is a potato variety developed locally from a breeding programme led jointly by the Food & Agricultural Research & Extension Institute (FAREI) and the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (MSIRI).
Distinctive features of the variety encompass high yield potential, ranging from 25 to 30 tonnes per hectare, of long oval-form tubers with cream fresh, in addition to high tolerance to late blight disease (commonly known locally as ‘Pala’), which leverages its adaptability for cultivation in all common potato growing areas of the country over both first and second season crop.
The variety was released in year 2018 for plantation on commercial scale. Mr Lavine Mungry, a regular potato planter in the region of Bigara, Curepipe, had part of his field planted with Vigora in 2020 for its first crop season. At harvest stage on 26th August 2020, FAREI organized a visit for potato planters of other regions in the field of Mr Mungry to observe first hand and ascertain the set of distinctive qualities inherent to variety Vigora.
