Banana – FHIA 17

Dual Purpose Banana Variety

Outstanding Qualities

  • Fast-growing and early bearing
  • High yielding (15 to 45 kg bunch)
  • Resistant to Eumusae leaf spot and Panama disease
  • Tolerant to banana freckle disease and banana weevil

FHIA 17 developed from the Honduran Breeding Programme, is a fast-growing, early bearing banana variety producing bunch weight of up to 45 kg under warm and humid conditions. It is resistant to Eumusae leaf spot (previously known as Mycosphaerella leaf disease complex) and Panama disease (Fusarium Wilt Race 1). It is also tolerant to banana freckle disease and the banana weevil. The plant is tall with a robust stem and resists lodging. The ripe fruit is suitable as dessert but is slightly less sweet than the Cavendish type banana. Green fruits can be used for cooking and for processing into crisps, fries and flour. Ripe fruits can be used for processing into dehydrated snacks and puree. Its resistance/tolerance to major pests and diseases makes it ideal for cultivation without the use insecticides and fungicides.
